Brief History of Port Royal, Florida
The community's history is deeply rooted in the fantastical adventures and historical relevance of pirate lore. Port Royal was named after the 17th century Jamaican city that was known for being the den of rowdy pirates, smugglers and privateers. This adventure-laden history fascinated real estate developer and entrepreneur John Glen Sample, who personally financed the development of the Port Royal master-planned community. Sample's intent was to create a winter retreat complete with beautiful, one-of-a-kind neighborhoods and resort-quality homes on streets that bear names hearkening back to the Caribbean's more romantically adventurous era, such as Rum Row, Cutlass Lane, and Galleon Drive.
Port Royal residents have plenty to do when it comes to recreation. From golfing at some of the county's most well-renowned golf courses, fishing off the local piers and swimming in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, to playing a friendly tennis match, sipping on a drink at the Beach Club, or just enjoying the beautiful Florida sunsets from the balcony of their own home, nothing is off limits here in Port Royal. Additionally, the city of Naples is just minutes away and residents can take advantage of the city's shopping, recreational, entertainment and economical amenities.
Port Royal's economy is supported by Collier County, which is the home of Health Management Associates, a Fortune 1000 company; INgage Networks, a technology company; and Arthrex, a medical equipment manufacturer.
